My husband, Coach Joe Walsh, is known for his story telling.  Whether he was on the field or at home he had endless tales to tell.  To those close to him, his family, friends, and players, we became familiar with selected quotes that he frequently shared. In the eyes of my husband, these well-worn expression were not meaningless phrases.  My husband put his heart into what he believe.  So, when he said something, he meant it.  Which also meant you got to hear it numerous times.  And, that is why so many friends and players can share a Coach Walsh story or one of his sayings time and again.

“We need to give our children roots and wings,” was a favorite of his and it has become a favorite of mine.  His vision on how best to strengthen those roots for our four daughters included modeling solid values and a strong work ethic, and making it possible for them to receive a good secondary education that prepared them for college.

After my husband passing, I felt it was important for my husband’s legacy to live on in the two things that he dedicated so much of his time to:  education and baseball.  It was my dream that a scholarship be started to financially help students from Catholic Memorial in order for them to fulfill the educational experience at an institution that provides a place for them to continue growing their roots. My hope is that the Coach Joe Walsh Memorial Golf Classic will help relieve some of the burden that the rising cost of education places on families by offering a scholarship each year to a Catholic Memorial baseball player.

My dream was just a little seed that I shared with Coach’s former players.  From there it grew into fruition.  From the bottom of my heart I want to thank all the good men who have the same vision as my husband, my husband’s former baseball players and coaches.   They have lifted my heart by bringing the Coach Joe Walsh Memorial Golf Classic to life.  I also want to thank all those who so enthusiastically participated in the first annual golf classic.

I hope you enjoy his story, “Retirement of a Gate Crasher” and remember to    “Always tell stories, and be worthy of the ones told of you.”  -Coach Joe Walsh

Gratefully yours,
Sandra Walsh

A note from Sandra Walsh

Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh was an outstanding baseball coach and an even better person. He touched so many lives through his association with Suffolk University, Harvard University, the Cape Cod Baseball League and amateur baseball throughout New England. To honor Joe's life, a group of former players have created a scholarship in Joe's name at his alma mater Catholic Memorial High School. This scholarship will be given annually to a deserving student. To fund the scholarship we are holding the second annual golf tournament  on September 29, 2016 at LeBaron Hills Country Club in Lakeville, MA. We would love to see as many of Joe's former baseball players as well as his girls basketball players and track / cross country athletes join us for a great day of golf for a great man and great cause. Keeping Joe's legacy alive through this annual scholarship! We hope to see you at the tournament, but if you cannot make it, please consider some of the other options available to contribute to the cause. The brochure is available through the Pay Now tab above.
